BJ Penn news features his upcoming opponent Frankie “The Answer” Edgar and his statements about making “The Prodigy” quit in their fight at the Ultimate Fighter 19 Finale on July 6 in Las Vegas.
Both men will be meeting for a third and possibly final time.
The last time they fought was at UFC 118 in August 2010, where “The Answer” won via unanimous decision and retained the UFC lightweight title. Prior to that meeting was the first title fight between both men, at UFC 112 in April 2010. Frankie Edgar also came out victorious in that fight, and was able to snag the belt off of BJ Penn’s waist.
The two victories that “The Answer” holds over “The Prodigy” is something personal for BJ Penn, as he admitted that his return to the Octagon was mainly to get back at his old rival.
“If Dana had asked me to come to 145, and fight any other people, there’s no way I would have done it,” Penn said during the UFC 175 pre-fight press conference in late-May.
BJ Penn news reveals “The Answer’s” own statements on facing the two-division world champion and his motivation as he aims to climb up the featherweight ladder.
“My motivation is, I just want to get back to the title,” Edgar said about the BJ Penn news. “You know, in order to do that I’m gonna have to win every fight in front of me.
“And just the fact that I don’t wanna lose the third time out. I won twice (against B.J.), for sure I don’t wanna lose the third time out,” he added.
As a long-time competitor during his wrestling days before the UFC, Frankie Edgar is the typical fighter who hates losing. While he does have a 2-0 advantage over BJ Penn, losing the third fight is not, and will never be an option.
“It’s been a year (since last fight), so that alone gets the juices flowing,” Edgar told The MMA Hour. “But I just don’t want to lose the third time out. The first two times, I wasn’t supposed to win. Now I’m supposed to win and I definitely don’t want to lose now.”
