Spain redeems itself on its last match in the World Cup, winning against Australia 3 – 0 at Arena da Baixada Monday.
Both Australia and Spain were eliminated in Group B as Netherlands and Chile advance to the next round of the tournament.
Spain takes the lead on the first half of the match as Andres Iniesta connects to Juan Fran, and passes it towards David Villa who buries it with a close-range right-footed shot on the 37th – minute mark.
Fernando Torres adds another point for Spain as he attacks with a right-footed shot which was assissted by Iniesta on the 69th – minute mark of the match.
Juan Mata concludes the match with a left-footed shot from a through ball by Francesc Fabregas on the 89th – minute mark.
Spain’s manager Vicente Del Bosque concludes their final match at an interview in CBC, saying: “We went out with dignity.”
Brad Fidel comments on the match at BBC Sports: “Au
stralia looked like they were trying to play with high energy levels but after Spain went 1-0 up it was like a friendly match and they sort of petered out.”
He further adds: “I’m glad it stayed at 3-0 because it could have been four, five or six and that would not have reflected just how well Australia played in this tournament.”
Spain finishes third under Group B, behind Netherlands and Chile while Australia ends up at fourth place. Both teams are now eliminated from the tournament, while Netherlands and Chile advance to the round of 16.
