Back when Universal Studios released , Chris Hemsworth was not the superstar the he is today. But even then, sources say that the company was already in talks about creating a sequel that would revolve around Hemsworth’s character.
Since then much has happened. The movie earned $400 million with only a $170 million budget, Kristen Stewart had a much-publicized affair with the movie’s director, and Hemsworth has skyrocketed to stardom with turns in the successful movie and the franchise.
It’s no surprise then that the 2 has gained more traction. In fact, more buzz has surrounded this second
movie with talks that Frank Darabont, who directed will be directing. According to , he beat out other directors such as Andy Muschiette (
) and Gavin O’Connor (
As for other characters, the good news is that Charlize Theron will back as the wicked queen. The last movie left her trapped inside her own enchanted mirror, so moviegoers will be wanting to see how she gets out of that one.
But Kristen Stewart — although her character does headline the title of the movie, will not return for the movie’s spin-off. This is in contrast to an interview she did back in 2012, where she excitedly talked about the possibility of coming back for the sequel.
She told ,” “Oh, it’s gonna be f— amazing. No, I’m so excited about it, it’s crazy.” She was also asked then about what the story of the sequel will be and she said it wasn’t for her to talk about. “I’m not allowed. The other day I said that there was a strong possibility that we’re going to make a sequel, and that’s very true, but everyone was like, ‘Whoa, stop talking about it.’ So no, I’m totally not allowed to talk about it,” the actress said.
Now there has been a shift in the film’s storyline apparently. It will focus exclusively on the huntsman, and an appearance by Snow While — if any — will just be a cameo. 2 is slated for release in 2016.
