Daniel Cormier’s next fight might be against Alexander Gustafsson as he expressed his intent to face the said fighter for the UFC interim light heavyweight title.
“DC” made his intentions known through an interview with , noting that he is also willing to step in and face “The Mauler” if Jon Jones does not agree to the latter’s challenge.
“I know this will probably be unpopular,” Cormier said. “But if [Jones] won’t sign, whether it be for money or a lack of wanting to fight the kid, I’ll fight Alexander Gustafsson. But it should be for the interim title.”
Daniel Cormier has slowly but surely made his presence felt since his UFC debut in April 2013. Holding an undefeated record and the honor of being the former Strikeforce heavyweight champion, “DC” has demolished all the opponents thrown his way.
After two fights at heavyweight, Daniel Cormier decided to move down to light heavyweight, and so far, his performance has been nothing less than spectacular. The latest name on his list is mixed martial arts legend Dan Henderson, whom he dominantly beat up and eventually choked out at UFC 173.
Rightfully so, “DC” has his sight sets on nothing else but facing Jon Jones for the light heavyweight belt, and he has made sure to send the message loud and clear to Dana White.
“I’m 35-years-old, it’s not like I’m a kid, so I can’t wait too long,” DanielCormier said of his next fight during the.
“But, you know, it means something to beat Jon Jones. I know Dana [White], we all praise Alexander Gustafsson for what he’s done, he’s a great fighter. But it means a little bit more to beat a Jon Jones.”
In an interesting turn of events, Dana White, has confirmed that Jon Jones himself asked for a fight against Daniel Cormier instead.
Jon Jones still has five fights left on his contract,” White told UFC.com. “So what we’re doing right now is trying to get him to sign the bout agreement for Gustafsson. He doesn’t want to fight Gustafsson.”
“Lorenzo and I have a meeting with Jones on Thursday to get him to sign the bout agreement, and he’s asking to fight Cormier instead,” he added.
