Fans will see more of Derek Fisher on the sidelines as he is now New York Knicks head coach.
According to Yahoo! Sports, Fisher’s contract is a done deal. According to the contract, Fisher will be coaching the Knicks for 5 years. It doesn’t come cheap too, as the contract price reveals a $25 million tag.
According to Sports Illustrated, “Fisher, played 17.6 minutes per game off the bench for the Thunder this season. He was a regular contributor throughout Oklahoma City’s run to the Western Conference finals and all the while a prominent figure in the Knicks coaching search.”
Fisher has been a strong candidate for the head coach post for months now. Some speculate that it’s because of the time he spent with Knicks’ team president Phil Jackson. Fisher used to be a point guard for the LA Lakers back when Jackson was still head coach.
“The last two summers, Derek and I have talked about the next step in his career,” Jackson said.
“So I kind of know what he wants to do, and his feelings. He’s got family in L.A. He’s got little kids still in L.A. I have no idea if he wants to move his family and come here. Those are things that he would have to express. There are so many unknowns.”
Fisher was also eyed to be the Lakers’ coach, but the team has decided to focus their attention on finding more experienced candidates.
The 39-year-old NBA favorite has been playing for 18 years already, but has little coaching experience under his belt. Fisher’s player to coach story can be likened to former baller Jason Kidd who is also a newcomer in the coaching business. Kidd is Brooklyn Net’s current head coach.
Aside from Fisher and Kidd, another former player, Steve Kerr, has signed on to be the Warriors’ head coach. Kerr used to play for the same team before he retired.
A press conference has been set for Tuesday to announce Derek Fisher’s new stint as Knicks coach.
