While the buzz that “22 Jump Street” actor Channing Tatum will play as Gambit in the future “X-Men” movie, the idea is still on the conceptual stage. However, Tatum feels that a standalone film should hit the big screen first before the character of Gambit appears in “X-Men” movies.
Tatum told MTV, “We’ve talked about it being a standalone [film] first, and actually trying to change the ‘hero’ superhero movie just a little because Gambit is not really your typical hero. He’s a thief. He walks on the gray. I’m hoping we try and can change it a little bit, and then feather into the other ones.”
It seems that not only Gambit is considered for “X-Men” spinoffs. Mystique, Professor X, and Magneto might get standalone films to expand the “X-Men” franchise. Although everything is still on planning stage, Jennifer Lawrence might reprise her role as Mystique; it is just that this time outside the “X-Men” movie proper. It also means that it is possible for James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender to get the leading roles as Professor X and Magneto, respectively.
No script yet has been made to confirm the “X-Men” spinoff Gambit, “Obviously, there’s nothing written … there’s only conversations and dreams, really, right now,” Tatum said to MTV.
With how the things are going, it seems that “Gambit” standalone film may take a while or may not hit the silver screen yet in the next two years. The possibility of Gambit, and Nightcrawler, appearing in the upcoming “X-Men: Apocalypse” is much higher than having a solo movie. However, Tatum may or may not be the one portraying the role of thief Remy LeBeau or better known as Gambit in the said “X-Men” sequel.
Tatum’s dream to play as Gambit may be within his reach; however, it’s still farn from being settled.
“Creatively, we’re starting to chug forward. Obviously there’s nothing official. There are only conversations and dreams right now, really,” he said.
