There was a hidden ocean found on Saturn’s moon only recently. Now, however, it would seem that science makes yet another breakthrough.
Scientists have found a massive body of water 400 miles below the United States. This finding confirms earlier hypotheses that water filters through the Earth, from the ocean’s waters, and is collected in huge reservoirs under the earth’s surface. This evidence suggests that the molecules of water are trapped inside the mineral rocks found in the earth’s mantle and will gradually cycle back up as a result of plate movement.
This massive underground body of water was discovered by a geophysicist, Steve Jacobson, and a seismologist from the University of New Mexico, Brandon Schmandt. This discovery of theirs can help scientists finally come to a conclusion on how the Earth was formed.
According to one of the discoverers, “I think we are finally seeing evidence for a whole-Earth water cycle, which may help explain the vast amount of liquid water on the surface of our habitable planet. Scientists have been looking for this missing deep water for decades.”
What makes the finding even more interesting is that this reservoir is not of its conventional type. There is no vast floating ocean under American soil, and the existence of dinosaurs on its shores is deemed impossible. The water they found were just water molecules trapped inside rocks.
Amazingly, if 1% of the entire make-up of the Earth’s mantle contained water, then it would tantamount to three times the amount of water that our oceans have.
This theory was first postulated when ringwoodite, a newly discovered mineral, was found in a volcanic incident in Brazil. Scientists believe that this particular mineral resurfaced from a depth of 400 meters below the Earth’s surface as they found a surprising amount of water inside it.
