The Jessica Williams Daily Show segment has drawn a lot of attention to the show. The segment features Williams, in her top form, together with Jordan Klepper, a correspondent of the show, as they grill the issues of gender-related injustice. The take of “The Daily Show” on sexual assault is refreshing and informative at the same time.
The segment is opened by Jon Stewart by discussing a certain sexual assault case at James Madison University. The case involved three frat boys who had far too much fun on spring break as they even taped themselves while sexually assaulting a classmate of theirs, who was obviously incapacitated. These three boys forwarded the video to their fraternity brothers, who also forwarded the video to others.
The university was quick to impose a punishment to these fraternity brothers. They were to be expelled upon graduation, which, as Stewart has pointed out, is pretty much the same with “graduation.”
This injustice is not only happening at James Madison. It is happening in different colleges and universities. The good news is, the Department of Education is now investigating these colleges that allegedly mishandle sexual assault cases. The video clip the duo used in the segment enlisted 55 schools that are being presently investigated. However, the actual number is actually 63.
Williams and Klepper then get down to the nitty-gritty of the issue and both of them have advice with regards to college fun. Klepper advised the boys to have a maximum limit for the fun they intend to have, while Williams advised the girls to avoid potential areas and instance of rape. Here is a bit of their conversation that made a lot of the show’s watchers clap their hands in Williams’ direction:
Klepper: “You’re telling me that women just spend their whole day just navigating an obstacle course of sexual menace?”
Williams: “Pretty much.”
Klepper: “Ha! Sorry, but not all men are bad! Some are still gentlemen, thank you very much.”
Williams: “Thanks. I’ll keep that in mind the next time a guy says he wants to lick my back when I’m walking to work at eight in the f*cking morning.”
