In the days leading to the Miguel Cotto vs. Sergio Martinez fight, Freddie Roach has been in his usual outspoken ways, this time calling Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez a ruined fighter.
In a report by
the Hall-of-Fame trainer believes his fighter will have no trouble with Sergio Martinez’s style, whom he also believes is “not a great boxer.
“Sergio is in over his head on this one,” Roach said. “We worked on fighting southpaws and have it down to a science now. Miguel will have no trouble with Sergio’s style.”
“Working opposite Miguel with Manny Pacquiao gave me great insight to Miguel’s flaws,” he added.
Freddie Roach is infamously known for his pre-fight predictions. He has been doing so with his most prized ward Manny Pacquiao, and has been the same now that he is cornering “Junito” for the second time for the Miguel Cotto vs. Sergio Martinez fight.
According to Roach, Miguel Cotto will be stopping Sergio Martinez in four rounds.
“This guy’s not gonna last four rounds,” Roach said referring to Martinez in an interview with Marcos Villegas of
a week ago. “He has no defense, his hands are low, he is so easy to hit. He’s a great athlete, but he’s not a great boxer.”
Freddie Roach is also confident with his working relationship with “Junito”, adding that they were able to work on the necessary adjustments for their weaknesses during camp. He also believes that “Maravilla” was ruined after he faced Julio Caesar Chavez Jr., whom he was training back in their September 2012 showdown.
“It taught me his weaknesses and during this camp I was able to eliminate them,” Roach said. “The wear and tear of the Julio Cesar Chavez Jr fight ruined Martinez. He has nothing left. Miguel is the fresher fighter.”
