For more than a decade, fans have been longing for Luffy’s father, Monkey D. Dragon’s past and his reason for building the Revolutionary Army. Now, a source close to Mangaka Eichiiro Oda has allegedly spilled the beans and revealed Oda’s inspiration for the character.
In the current manga chapter (751 as of writing), some members of the Revolutionary Army was finally introduced. Many were shocked to find out that Luffy and Ace’s adoptive brother, Sabo, is actually alive and also the chief-of-staff of the Revolutionary Army. He was also able to acquire Ace’s power, the Mera Mera No Mi by winning the Corrida Coliseum Tournament.
The source said their appearance signals the introduction of the Revolutionary army’s executives after the Dressrossa Arc, where Sabo and company reports back to Dragon regarding the secrets hidden at Dressrossa, where one of his commanders says ‘That bastard Sakazuki won’t be able to relax anymore, it seems like the Red Dog (Akainu) is still two steps behind the White Dragon (Shiroryuu)’.
This theory has been circulating around the web for quite some time now. One Piece is rich in mythological references not only in characters but also in some parts of its story. In Monkey D. Dragon’s case, it appears like he is based from the Chinese Mythology’s four great seas. It is worth noting that the North Blue is represented by the color yellow and a monkey, which hints on Admiral Kizaru also known as Borsalino. South Blue, is symbolized by the color blue and a bird, which resembles Former Admiral Aokiji also known as Kuzan. While West Blue, is epitomized by color Red and a dog, which strongly hints on now Fleet Admiral Akainu, a.k.a. Sakazuki. Which leaves us with East Blue, symbolized by color White and a Dragon, and apparently, this is where Dragon comes into the equation, a former admiral named Shiroryuu. Another hint would be Dragon is often noticed by Emporio Ivankov always looking at the East Blue.
