Scout Willis, Demi Moore and Bruce Willis’ daughter, was photographed walking around topless on the Lower East Side in New York City in late May.
Willis posted the picture of her topless self on her Twitter account with the caption, “What Instagram won’t let you see,” in order to fight against Instagram’s “anti-nudity” policy, according to the
Willis explained that she had received two warnings from Instagram about posting “inappropriate” content, shortly after making her Instagram account public.
“I wasn’t even sure why. It wasn’t like I was posting blatant nudes,” stated the 22-year-old, during her interview with the
Willis realized that it was time to speak up when the photo of a bomber jacket, which featured two of her friends topless on the back of the jacket, was taken down. Soon after the photo was removed, her account was reportedly deactivated altogether.
Scout Willis compared the photos she posted on her account to those of Instagram star and millionaire poker player, Dan Bilzerian.
“I didn’t mean to target him, but he was a good juxtaposition for what I was talking about. His photos are outrageous. They’re just so rude and so mean and every woman is called a bitch by Bilzerian himself or his legions of fans,” explained Willis.
In her blog post on xoJane.com, Scout Willis went on to detail that her fight against Instagram’s policy extends to far more than meets the eye.
“I am white and I was born to a high profile and financially privileged family. I didn’t choose my public life, but it did give me this platform. A platform that helps make body politics newsworthy,” wrote Willis, according to
She continued, “I am not trying to argue for mandatory toplessness, or even bralessness. What I am arguing for is a woman’s right to choose how she represents her body – and to make that choice based on personal desire and not fear of how people will react to her or how society will judge her. No woman should be made to feel ashamed of her body.”
